Your care team

Our experts work as a team to support your physical and emotional needs. Your cancer care team may include doctors and other health care professionals.

Doctors

Your primary care provider guides your overall medical care. This is the first medical professional you should go to about any health concern.

Some women choose an obstetrician / gynecologist (OB/GYN) as their primary care provider. OB/GYNs are doctors who specialize in the care of the female reproductive system.

Gynecologic oncologists diagnose and treat cancer of the female reproductive system, which includes the ovaries, cervix and uterus.

Radiation oncologists stop the growth of cancer cells with radiation therapy.

Radiologists use CT scans, PET scans and ultrasound to find cancer.

Pathologists work in the medical laboratory, where they examine cells, body fluids and tissue samples for traces of cancer.

Surgeons with special training can remove tumors from the ovaries, cervix and uterus.

Other cancer care team members

Nurse coordinators meet with patients and their families to help them navigate the medical system. The same nurse coordinator can support a patient from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.

Genetic counselors address concerns about inheriting cancer.

Social workers provide counseling and support for the social and living needs of you and your family. This can help you make a smooth transition from hospital to post-hospital care.
