Dr. Jonathan Gipson is a board certified general surgeon with a special focus on bariatric surgery, procedures for individuals seeking weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.
Dr. Gipson graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 2001 and completed his medical residency at the Mayo Clinic in 2006, the year he began to practice at Unity Hospital. During his surgical training at Mayo, Dr. Gipson developed a special expertise in advanced laparoscopic techniques – less invasive procedures that require shorter hospital stays and allow patients to recover from surgery more quickly.
For patients who qualify, Dr. Gipson performs laparoscopic adjustable gastric band procedures (Lap-BandŽ and REALIZE™), as well as open and laparoscopic gastric bypass. The laparoscopic procedures offer the same advantages as the standard open bypass surgery, but with smaller incisions and shorter recovery time. Dr. Gipson’s philosophy for minimally invasive laparoscopic approaches to surgery extends throughout his practice where he also helps patients who require hernia repairs, colon surgeries, gallbladder surgeries, spleen removal and adrenal gland removal. He practices with Allina Medical Clinic – Bariatric Surgical Specialties, Unity Hospital, and is also the medical director for trauma at Unity.
The Unity Hospital Bariatric Center’s reputation for comprehensive patient care and its dedicated staff are the reasons Dr. Gipson chose to join the medical staff at Unity Hospital. Dr. Gipson’s sincere desire to help obese patients gain control of their weight and to treat the co-morbid conditions that often accompany obesity – like hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea and degenerative joint disease – drew him to Unity’s center.
Born in New Haven, Conn., Dr. Gipson was raised in Los Angeles. Dr. Gipson met his wife at Carleton College in Northfield, where he received his bachelor’s degree in history. They have lived in Minnesota ever since.
