Unity Family Birth Center
Back to Family Birth Center
The Unity Family Birth Center provides family-centered maternal and newborn services in a home-like setting.
Choosing a hospital to deliver your baby is an important decision for you and your family. The Unity Family Birth Center is an exceptional place for your family to begin. As a family-centered care hospital with specially trained staff, we are flexible in meeting every mother's personal wishes.
Doula
Our services at Unity Hospital may also include providing doulas for those who request them. Doula is a Greek word meaning "woman's servant." Doulas provide physical, emotional and informational support to women and their partners during labor. For more information about our doula program, call 763-236-3080.
Labor and Delivery
At the birth center, you experience labor and deliver your child in the same private room. Each room has a television, audio cassette player, CD player and VCR. Family members and visitors are welcome to join you, and you are encouraged to rest and learn about your new baby.
We also offer a daily education class covering self and newborn care to help prepare you for going home.
Postpartum
After recovery, you are transferred to a private room in the Family Centered Care Unit.
Nursery
You are welcome to keep your new baby with you as much as you like. However, if you would like some private time, the nursery is available to care for your baby.
Special Care Nursery - Level II
For newborns requiring special care, physicians with The Minnesota Neonatal Physicians, P.A. at Minneapolis Children's Hospital are available daily in the special care nursery at Unity Hospital. They collaborate with our neonatal nurse practitioners who are available 24 hours a day and provide care or consulting for many of the babies admitted to the special care nursery.
Lactation (Breastfeeding)
The staff at Unity Hospital would like to help you in any way we can to make your breastfeeding experience pleasant. Several of our hospital nurses have had advanced lactation education, training and certification and keep their skills up-to-date by regularly attending classes and conferences. Our lactation educators are available to answer your questions and assist you with your nursing needs. Please ask your nurse for help with breastfeeding if you would like assistance.
We offer a one hour daily breastfeeding class available while you are here to help assist you and your newborn.
Our breastfeeding "warmline" is available for your use after you go home. If you have questions about breastfeeding, call the warmline at 763-236-3405. We will return your call in a timely manner, usually within 24 hours. Please note that the warmline is for feeding questions. If your baby is ill, contact your baby's physician.
If at any time you wish to speak directly to a nurse, you may contact the Family Centered Care Unit at 763-236-3402. When you call this number ask for a lactation educator. Someone will be able to assist you with your breastfeeding questions.
We also offer an outpatient lactation clinic if you need additional help with breastfeeding after going home. There is a charge for this visit and you will need to schedule an appointment by calling the warmline, and you will see one of our lactation educators. You may call the lactation educator Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 763-236-3427.
